[comp.windows.x] XV11R2

weltyc@nisc.nyser.net (Christopher A. Welty) (02/09/88)

I have a question about the legendary release 2. What will it
look like? I mean, will there be one huge release containing
everything (my guess on this is yes)? Will there be a set of diffs for
R1? If yes, will this be diffs for an R1 with no patches applied, for
an R1 with n patches applied, where n=???

I would like to know so that I can prepare for it.

It will be split into two or more tar files, but yes.

Will there be a set of diffs for R1?

Thou jokest, surely.

Working with the new version of X (XV11R2), I am *disappointed* in the
response time of window operations. My questions are :

Are window operations sent across the network, even when
the destination machine is the same as the source?

Is there a way to optimize these window operations, either
batching them or not sending them on the network at all?

For example, when using Xtk, video inverting about 30 Command (Button)
Widgets takes about 7 seconds!!!!!

X.V11R2 plus all the currently available updates and almost all of the
goodies from the expo archive at MIT are available from doc.ic.ac.uk.
To have details mailed to you about how to retrieve these sources please email
	info-server@doc.ic.ac.uk
with an empty subject line and a message body of:

request catalogue
topic xv11r2
topic xv11r2-updates
topic xv11r2-unoff
topic xv11r2-andrew
request end

This will cause a mail message for each topic to be mailed back to you
(automatically) which will tell you how to get ahold of the software.

If you have problems either getting replies from the info-server or in getting
the software itself please mail me (lmjm).

Since doc.ic gets real bills for its non-UK mail the info-server service
is currently only available inside the UK.

However all of the sources can be fetched using ``Blue-book'' niftp
over X25 so PSS/IPSS sites should be able to retrieve them. If you are at such
a site email me and I'll give you what help I can on connecting to us for
file transfer.

I'll write for tapes for people as a ***LAST*** resort, I'm a busy man. When
I say "busy" I'm not fooling around.
