[comp.windows.x] Where can one find X-windows source

mikej@dasys1.UUCP (Mike Johnston) (08/13/88)

Pardon my innocence but I have heard that the X-windows source is in
the public domain. Is this true? If so, where can I obtain the source?
Thanks.

Not exactly. The X Window System is not in the public domain, but it is freely
available. The difference is that MIT and other organizations maintain
copyrights that do not restrict redistribution so that the lineage of the
various pieces can be traced.

If you have ARPA Internet access you can use anonymous ftp to retreive it
yourself from any of the following sites (try to do it during the evening or
the weekend, if possible):

	West decwrl.dec.com X/X.V11R2/
	East uunet.uu.net pub/X.V11R2/
	Northeast	expo.lcs.mit.edu	pub/X.V11R2/

Otherwise, you can contact the MIT Technology Licensing Office and order the
full 2 tape set (core and user-contributed distributions on 9-track magnetic
tape in Unix tar format along with printed versions of most of the major
documents) for $400. Their phone number is (617) 253-6966.

Actually, decwrl.dec.com doesn't do anonymous FTP anymore. This function is
now performed by

			gatekeeper.dec.com	pub/X.V11R2/

The IP address, for those of you without name servers, is [128.45.9.52].
