In a recent posting, I mentioned that the final version of our books on Xlib would be available at Xhibition. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that we are not allowed to sell books at the show, so a clarification is in order. We will be *showing* the final version of the books at Xhibition, but to obtain them, you will have to order them from us at the address or phone number given at the end of this posting. But first, I've been flooded with mail requesting information on the contents of the books. What we are talking about is a two volume set on Xlib programming. The Xlib Programming Manual provides a tutorial introduction to Xlib, with sample programs and demonstrations of programming techniques. The Xlib Reference Manual includes detailed information on each of the Xlib functions, as well as other essential reference material. The two volumes are meant to be used together, and are sold as a set for $60 plus shipping. The books do not cover the X toolkit--we are planning a book on that subject for later this year. Here are the contents of the two volumes in more detail: Volume 1: Xlib Programming Manual (611 pages) X concepts A basic window program Window Attributes The Graphics Context Drawing Programming in color Events The Keyboard and Pointer Interclient Communication Managing User Preferences (the resource manager) A complete sample application Window management Volume 2: Xlib Reference Manual (700 pages) Reference pages for each Xlib function A permuted index to the Xlib functions Reference pages for each event type Description of macros Alphabetical index and description of structures Alphabetical index and description of defined symbols A list of keysyms and their meaning, including sample characters A list of standard fonts, with illustrations of each font A function group index, for finding the right function for a particular task Quick-reference aids for the GC and window attributes The two books are perfect bound, in a standard large format technical paperback size, which replaces our 8 1/2 by 11 preliminary edition. The cost of the two volume set is $60 plus $5 shipping for each set ordered. Starting in a week or two, it should be available at B. Dalton's and various technical bookstores. Or it can be ordered direct from us by calling 800-338-6887 and having a credit card handy, or by sending a check to: O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. 981 Chestnut Street Newton, MA 02164 We'll have copies in stock starting Monday, August 22. We ship by UPS ground, or can ship UPS second day for a small additional cost. If you have already purchased a copy of a preliminary edition of the book, you can upgrade to the final (which is significantly expanded) by tearing off the cover of your copy of Volume 1, and sending it to us with a check for $20 (which includes shipping). ****Foreign upgraders: please call us for additional shipping costs!**** We also are developing an X Window System User's Guide, which we will be showing in preliminary form at Xhibition, but which will not be available for sale for another three or four weeks. Additional information will be posted when the book is available. -- Tim O'Reilly (617) 527-4210 O'Reilly & Associates, Inc., Publishers of Nutshell Handbooks 981 Chestnut Street, Newton, MA 02164 UUCP: uunet!ora!tim ARPA: tim@ora.uu.net
