>The X11R2 Inter-Client Communications Conventions Manual (ICCCM)
>briefly discusses a "window_group" window hint. Are any current window
>managers using this? If so, for what?

excerpted from the manual for the Siemens RTL Tiled Window
Manager:

   - Users can perform group-iconification -- display a single icon for a
group of top-level windows (for clients that define window groups).

	...

   5. Group Close -- If the window is part of a window group, hides all
windows and icons in the group and opens an icon for the group
leader. If not part of a group, acts like Close.

	...

   4. Open (LEFT BUTTON) -- If the icon is associated with a closed group,
restores the windows and icons of that group.

	...

The window_group field specifies a "group leader". All windows with
the same group leader are part of the same group. The user can
close the whole group, and the icon for the group ledaer is
      displayed.
