[comp.windows.x] Macintosh X11 Server?

dcr0@bunny.UUCP (David Robbins) (09/08/88)

Has anyone implemented an X11 server that will run on a Macintosh under the
Macintosh operating system (NOT A/UX)? I have this vague recollection of
having seen some mention of such a server within the last few months on
the net, but of course at that time I was not interested in remembering it.
Well, now my inquiring mind wants to know. :-)

My interest is simply in a server that would allow a Macintosh to be a terminal
speaking to X clients running on other machines. I have no requirement for X
clients to run on the Macintosh itself along with the server; I suspect that
would be asking just too much of the Mac OS. I would, however, expect the
server to be Multifinder-compatible and to be functionally similar, aside from
the obvious differences, to, say, a VT100 emulator on the Mac.

And I'm not really particular about how the server would communicate with the
other machines. The serial port is certainly one possibility. AppleTalk
is another (our AppleTalk is linked to Ethernet through a Kinetics box). And
we have a few Mac IIs hanging directly off the Ethernet. I'm sure I remember
hearing about TCP/IP implementations under the Mac OS.

I will be happy to summarize for the net the responses I get, if any, and if
anyone else is interested in such a summary.

There is nothing in 'product' form yet, but White Pine Software (P.O. Box
1108 Amherst, N.H. 03031, 603-886-9050) has a prototype they are working
on. It has the requirements you are looking for (although it runs only on
a II currently, and uses Apples Ethertalk card, it could use other
communication drivers, and may run on other machines if there is demand).

Apple also has a server that runs under MacOS, but it is not an announced
product, and may or may not be released. I saw a demo at Xhibition, but
Apple wasn't free to discuss what was going to be done with it.
