[comp.windows.x] Responses to 386 X and/or NeWS

"Michael_Powers.Henr801M"@XEROX.COM (09/15/88)

Messages are still appearing daily telling me of released window system products
for the 386. Although this is true I thought I would consolidate what I have so
far and post it. I'll update it as appropriate later.

Although my original quest was/is for a Unix V.3 version there were many
responses related to other 386 OS and configurations. I've included these for
those who are interested.

I am still interested in finding a NeWS port for Unix V.3 as are many of those
who responded to my previous posting. Noone from Sun responded to my plea and my
sales rep doesn't have a clue. Can it be that NeWS exists for OS/2 but not for
UnixV.3?

X Window System V11

Company:	AT&T
Product Name:	AT&T XWIN Graphical Windowing System
Address:
Phone:
Price:
Notes:
Well, AT&T's X server is available, X11r2 based. It can run our CGA and
EGA cards, but is only supported (warranty, hotline, etc.) on our equipment
and Unix System V r. 3.2. Just became available at the beginning of the
month. I'ts the first release, so not yet "souped up", so you probably
want 4MB of memory and a 80387 to have good performance.

Since we live in the age of the ABI, the server might very well actually
run on a Compaq and some other port of Unix, but I haven't heard of it
being tested.

Disclaimer: AT&T currently only supports Unix System V r3.2 and the
X Window server that runs under it on our 6386 and 6386E machines.
Your mileage may vary. Contents may settle during shipment...

Company:	Microfield Graphics, Inc.
Product Name:
Address:	9825 SW SUnshine Court, Beaverton, OR 97005
Phone:	(503) 641-9333
Price: about $2500 (software comes with board, see notes)
Notes:
Microfield Graphics, Inc. has a high resolution graphics board
available which is supposed to work in 386 based PC-AT compatibles. The
wonderful thing about it is that they are not waiting for the various
UNIX vendors to get their acts together, and rather, are shipping X11
with the board for no cost. (At least, that is what their sales people
said. He said they have software for Microport, Interactive, and Bell
Tech. It is claimed to be a port performed by GSS (the same people who
I thought were providing ports for each of the above mentioned UNIX
vendors). The board is a rather nice device, capable of 1280 by 1024,
256 colors of a palette of 4K. It is compatable with a significant
number of monitors, and provides bus-level emulation of IBM EGA and CGA.
The only draw back to this card is its high price (about $2500).

I have not tried the board yet, but should be getting one as soon as the
p purchase order gets through the paper mill. The company can be
contacted at (503) 641-9333. Or Microfield Graphics, Inc., 9825 SW
Sunshine Court, Beaverton, OR 97005. (As an interesting sidenote, GSS
is also located in Beaverton, OR, the heart of the silicon forest).
