[comp.windows.x] X for the PC

romwa@gpu.utcs.toronto.edu (Mark Dornfeld) (10/04/88)

Hi There,

This is a beginners query from someone whose exposure
to X was some time back on a GPX. At the time, I just did
enough to get my thesis done and I haven't kept up with
developments in X.

Firstly I'd like to know if it is at all possible to
have an X system going on a COMPAQ 386/25 running SCO XENIX?
If so, what kind of graphics support do I need (i.e. will
EGA/VGA suffice - I wonder what they are going to do when they
get to ZGA). If the regular PC options are out, then what
kind of hardware do I need? I am interested mainly in a
monochrome display with at least 64 grey scales. Colour would
be nice but I don't think we could handle the expense.

Any and all responses would be appreciated. Please
note that if you are applying by e-mail, then use my address
below. We don't have news on that system, but mail works
fine.
