From time to time in this group there are requests for information about text editors that work with X. A short time ago, Rob Pike posted some information about his 'sam' editor being available through the AT&T Unix Toolchest, and said that he was willing to send front ends for either X or suntools to anyone who bought it. I am very pleased to be able to say the following: - We (Adasoft) bought it, through AT&T Unix Europe Ltd, no less. I have not always had smooth sailing with UEL, but this time they did very, very well. I hope this is a sign of things to come. - The software as we received it from AT&T UEL included the X and suntools front ends, so it was not necessary to mail Rob and ask him for them. - We are now using it on a Vaxstation 2000 with Ultrix 2.0 and X.V11R2 from the MIT distribution tape, and on an IBM RT/PC with AIX 2.2 and a beta release of X.V11R? from IBM. Only minor adjustments to the makefiles were needed on the Vaxstation. Slightly larger adjustments were necessary on the RT, but still nothing very serious. - IT IS WONDERFUL. The windowing interface works just fine, and the editor syntax is a wonder to behold. If you are still looking for an editor to use with X, you certainly should look seriously at sam. jw
