I am trying to bring up x10r4 on a Sun386i. I have not tried X11 but cannot
really use it yet anyway. [X10 is needed to run the U.C.Berkeley CAD tools.]
If there's anyone out there that has done this on a 386i I'd sure appreciate any
help you can give me!
The machine is a Sun386i Model 250. 25 Mhz, 8Mbyte RAM, 32K cache, Sony 16"
color monitor, 327 Mbyte local disk. It's running SunOS 4.0.0.

I brought the source tree over and did 'make sun', 'make x', etc. and appear to
have most of the system built.
'xinit' brings up the 'X' server with a screen background and an X cursor that
tracks the mouse. 'xterm' works as a client with a display server running on
one of our Sun 4's. However any attempt to run a server on the 386i fails with
font related messages. E.g., 'xinit' outputs these messages as 'xclock',
'xterm', and 'uwm' all fail to come up.
xclock: Permission denied
xclock: Can't get font
xterm: Can't get title font vtsingle
uwm: Unable to get font 'helv12'.
xterm: Can't get title font vtsingle
A later attempt to 'setenv DISPLAY both:0 ; xterm' also returns
xterm: Can't get title font vtsingle
I appear to have all the fonts in /usr/local/X/lib/X/font/... and, the build was
done to point there (as near as I can tell). I've also checked all the
permissions and even run as "root" (with the same behavior).
I suspect something really simple (like an environment variable) but can't seem
to find anything else to try.
Thanks in advance,
