[net.news] unknown problem with netnews

gauldin@ihuxf.UUCP (06/01/83)

I recently ran into a strange problem while reading news. I had
just replied to an article (via mail). When I went back to reading,
some articles came out as garbage. The headers would look fine, but
the article itself would be a short line or two of unintelligible
characters. Not all articles were garbled, some came out fine. I
quit readnews and came back and reread the previously garbled
articles, and they were fine (well, at least they were readable).
Has anyone else encountered this problem?

We've found another case where articles are printed out as garbage. One of
our users disabled the default pager by setting the environment variable
PAGER to null. He found that if he used the delete key to stop the printing
of a long article, all subsequent articles were printed as a few lines of
junk. I don't know if this is related to Mark Gauldin's mail problem, but
it does have similar symptoms. In our case, all articles were garbaged
until he quit readnews and went back in. If anyone figures out what the
problem is, I'd like to hear it.
