How can I ask the X server (V11) for his preferential image format ? (I mean XYPixmap or ZPixmap). for instance, on SUN 3 with 8 bits color display, it take 250 times longer with XYFormat than with ZFormat to get a 128x128 XImage from the server. On my DPX1000 display with 2 planes, the situation is inverted. for the moment, I've add a "-z" option on the command line but if I can remove it ... ------- -- Daniel Dardailler | Email : daniel@mirsa.inria.fr BULL Centre de Sophia Antipolis | Phone : (33) 93 65 77 71 2004, Route des Lucioles | Telex : 97 00 50 F 06565 Valbonne CEDEX France | Fax : (33) 93 65 77 65

How can I ask the X server (V11) for his preferential image format ? (I mean XYPixmap or ZPixmap). You can't. There are many, many "performance" criteria that applications might like to know about, but I've never seen a workable proposal for how to convey this information in a reasonable fashion.
