I recently reported that I was getting garbled articles out of readnews. I keep encountering the problem, and I have a little more information about what the symptoms are. For some reason, only the characters that appear in position 1 of each line of the article will be printed. For example, I just saw an "article" that looked something like this: tscSsr R ! When I quit and then reentered readnews and reread the article (which I won't copy here), I found that it started with a blank line, followed by an indented line, followed by lines starting with t,s,c,S,s, and r, followed by another blank line, a line starting with R, a blank, and a line starting with !.
