[comp.windows.x] X.V11R3/OS 4.0 SunView

repka@OCLCRSUN.BITNET (Tony Repka) (11/19/88)

I compiled X.V11R3 on our Sun-3 system (SunOS 4.0) without a problem.
The system works fine when invoked from the console tty, but not
when invoked from within SunView.

When invoked from SunView, my '.xinit' file is executed appropriately starting
up 'xterm's, etc. and the X cursor appears indicating a normal system.

Inputs, however, are received alternately between the X environment and
SunView when only the X environment should be active.

When the mouse is moved, not only does the X cursor move, but the SunView
mouse cursor re-appears and moves.

Keyboard input also switches between the two environments (garbage is printed
when keyboard echoing goes to SunView because of the 'kbd_mode -e' syndrome).
Within an xterm window, characters are echoed repeatedly when typed and
sometimes ctrl-C's are not sensed.

Upon exiting X, the screen remains dirtied with the X background pattern
instead of re-freshing the SunView windows. On our 3/280, an
"xterm: Broken pipe" message will appear. Although one can exit SunView at this
point, the keyboard is left in the 'kbd_mode -e' state and the typing of any
key causes the system to get confused and ultimately terminate the user's
login session.

Has anyone encountered this problem? Can anyone provide leads for a solution?
Release 2 worked fine under OS 4.0 when invoked from SunView. Use of 'ps'
indicates no difference in processes between the R2 and R3 versions.

Thanks to all who responded to the problem I presented relating
to running X Windows Release 3 from SunView. Of course, it was
the blatant non-definition of "UseSunWindowsInServer" in the
'Sun.macros' file.
