I've hacked xtroff (the ditroff previewer in contrib/clients in the R3 distribution) so that it sort of works under R3. I have put the patches to update xtroff on expo.lcs.mit.edu (18.30.0.212) for anonymous ftp. Get contrib/xtroff.r3.shar.Z (binary mode). It's 18366 bytes long, and the checksum is 40906 18 Uncompress and unshar it. Read the file CHANGES.R3 and run the enclosed scripts. It isn't upto Larry Wall's standards, but it should be straightforward to update. There are still some things that look weird (menus, scrollbars) - I may get around to them eventually. There's a few other things I have to do first. Fixes to me, please - I'll collect and send out another patch when there's enough changes. Have fun.

To run xtroff, you need to add the font directory to your path. Something like xset fp+ /usr/lib/X11/fonts/xtroff or wherever you set SUNTROFF_FONTS to.

The Andrew toolkit contains a ditroff previewer that works quite nicely under R3. To build it, make sure that you have defined the #define DITROFF_ENV in andrew/config/andrewenv.h, and build andrew/atk/preview. You will have to build the andrew/atk/basics, andrew/atk/support, and andrew/atk/apps directories first. Then say "troff -ms paper.ms | preview" to see your work on the screen, with some nice modes for scaling the picture, and switching back and forth between pages. Bill

I don't know exactly how this subject started, but STDWIN also contains a ditroff previewer. Not yet ported to R3, but I suppose R2 is close enough. -- Guido van Rossum, Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI), Amsterdam guido@piring.cwi.nl or mcvax!piring!guido or guido%piring.cwi.nl@uunet.uu.net
