[net.news] Problem with numeric subgroup names

perry@gatech.UUCP (06/09/83)

Actually, the situation that is more likely to cause a problem is
when someone decides to create net.micro.286 and net.micro has an
unexpired article number 286. The point is that allowing numeric
subgroup names with the new spool directory structure creates an
inconsistency in the handling of article files and subgroup
directories that requires special-case programming to avoid problems.
That's just the kind of situation that makes bugs appear mysteriously
when someone makes apparently innocent changes to the code.
Since top-level newsgroups are already required to begin with an
alphabetic character, it seems logical to fix the problem by just
extending that requirement to subgoups.
