Actually, the situation that is more likely to cause a problem is when someone decides to create net.micro.286 and net.micro has an unexpired article number 286. The point is that allowing numeric subgroup names with the new spool directory structure creates an inconsistency in the handling of article files and subgroup directories that requires special-case programming to avoid problems. That's just the kind of situation that makes bugs appear mysteriously when someone makes apparently innocent changes to the code.
