(Hope these queries aren't too lowly for this exalted forum.) Is there any way for a non-superuser to change the color of a root-owned login xterm window (X11R2)? Xterm doesn't supply any external means of changing it's window background once it has started. Since your example assumes you have no access to the command line or the resource file(s) read by the login window, there's not much you can do. > "Xterm Control Sequences" document; doesn't exist for X11. Noone's yet had time to update the X10R4 version.

Gee, another chance to plug xdm! :-) Getting rid of that silly login window is one of several reasons why xdm was written. You might want to ask whoever is maintaining your machines to upgrade to R3.
