I'm looking for information/experiences on manipulating geopolitical maps under X. For example: say you have coordinate data for state/county/city/zip-code boundaries and you want to superimpose each geopolitcal unit onto the next larger unit starting with zip-codes. So, within a city there may be multiple zip codes; multiple zip-codes and cities within a county; multiple counties within a state; etc. I'd like to be able to highlight arbitrary zip code regions within a given city or county region, and have another program be told which zip codes were flagged. I'd like this to be mouse-driven. I.e., pointing to the zip-code area and clicking the mouse selects that zip-code region. Pointing to the city and/or country *boundary* selects all zip codes within that region. 1) Has this been done before? 2) How difficult is it to do this type of graphical manipulation under X? 3) Suggestions on where to start and relevant reading material.
