[comp.windows.x] xtrek on HP9000

marco@hpuamsa.UUCP (Marco Lesmeister) (01/26/89)

I tried for about a week to get the xterk program running
on my machine, but I didn't succeed in it.

Here's my configuration:

I run on a HP9000/370 as a diskless client on a HP9000/350 server
Yellow Pages runs also on the system.

I changed the inetd.conf and services files, but I could not make
the xtrek font, because we don't have the bnf2snf program.

netstat -a show a *.xtrek entry, so that should be fine.
When I try to start xtrek up, The xtrek program just
immediately stops, because the first read it does returns a 0.
How come?

Please help,

Thanks,

Marco Lesmeister.

In regards to bdf2snf, I changed my Makefile like so:

#
# jas (Jeff Schmidt) Use xfc to compile the font. Don't know anything
# about 'bdf2snf'.
#
#xtrek.snf: xtrek.bdf
# bdftosnf -t xtrek.bdf > xtrek.snf

xtrek.snf: xtrek.bdf
        /usr/bin/X11/xfc xtrek.bdf > xtrek.snf

I compiled this on a 9000/350 and get similar results. I don't know
why. I'd like to figure it out someday. It's just a matter of time...

You might try the standard Chris Guthrie (Sys V shared Mem) version...
I've got that running on a 9000/840, but haven't tried it on a s300 yet.

Marco and everyone else with HP's (quite a lot I think):

My next release works on the HP's. I'm just now working on getting
it running on Apollo's. When I release this next version, it will have
been tested (and work!) on:
	Sun 3/50, 3/60, 4/110, both monochrome and color screens;
	HP's (don't know models...I didn't do the testing),
	SGI-GT's,
and	Apollo's (don't know enough about apollo's to know the model numbers).

Please be patient...

I assume this is the X11 version of xtrek that ddickey@unix.eta.com posted
a little while ago. I've fixed it to work with my machine (9000/350
running HP-UX 6.2 and X11) and sent him the patches so that it compiles and
runs correctly on hpux. You can either write to ddickey for some shar
files or use anonymous ftp to hpindl1 for pub/x11trek.tar.Z (sorry, HP
internet only - maybe I can convince someone on the open internet to
archive the code).
