[comp.windows.x] XPC server availability ?

bae@unisoft.UUCP (Hwa Jin Bae) (01/31/89)

Is XPC server still available on expo somewhere? If so, I can't locate it.

If you have a copy of XPC server code (by Michael Parker, et. al.), please
let me know. I have been trying to get this for months now, and as a
last resort I can't help but cluttering this group with this. Jim? Mike?

i have what appears to be some of it. it was ported on top of an old version
of our (ftp software's) berkeley socket libraries in turbo C (from borland).
it is *not* complete, and a server (even a buggy one) cannot be built from
what code i have.

i will also note that while there is no copyright on the code, it is not
clear that bellcore *knew* that the code was being released (which may be
why it is hard to find now.) would anyone from bellcore, in parkers group,
care to comment? anyone know where i can call to talk to someone there?

i *would* be interested in talking to parker (who i was told returned
to school) to see if it was ever finished. there is a copy of a letter
suggesting the work be given to the X consortium, but no copies of
a reply.

The user-contributed part of R3 has some fragments of code and documentation
that have been accused of being useful in porting X to MS-DOS. It was based on
a little bit of work done two summers ago at Bellcore and was provided in the
hope that somebody will try to do a public port of R3.

If you'd like to beat up on Mike Parker, his email address is:

			mbparker@athena.mit.edu

Or, if you don't feel like spending that much time, there are a growing number
of vendors who would be glad to sell you a DOS server.
