[comp.windows.x] What is the status of Gadgets?

I have seen a lot of messages regarding gadgets lately, and I am wondering
what the status is?

I think windowless widgets ( gadgets ) are an excellent idea. I use
the X Toolkit and the HP Widget Set extensively and know that it would
be nice to eliminate some of the unnecessary overhead added on to
various widgets.

I have read DEC's publication on DECwindows, and it briefly mentions
gadgets. It talks more about how their windowing environment would
look, and bypasses the implementation of the X Toolkit extensions.

I have also heard that HP is working (or has finished) a version of
gadgets.

What I am wondering is where does this stand with the X Consortium?
Will this become part of the X Standard, or will it be a usefull
extension that is not standardized. Will it be available with future
distributions of X, or will HP and DEC keep the source for themselves?

Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

The bare essentials for gadgets already exist in the R3 implementation
of the Intrinsics. The new classes are not yet part of the official spec,
but are currently under review in the X Consortium. Whether and when
any public widget sets will include gadget support, and of what flavor,
only time will tell.
