[comp.windows.x] attempting to open /dev/sg

wicinski@nrl-cmf.UUCP (Tim Wicinski) (02/16/89)

This goes along the lines of some of the shortcomings with xdm. I wanted
a console window to dump my output into on my Vaxstation 2000 running
X.V11R3 with the new sg.o from expo (Ultrix version 2.2-1). According to
the manual page for sg(4) states that one can open the third minor
device and then sg will "function like a psuedo-tty in that the output
destined for the first minor device is channeled to the third instead."
Fine. I attempted this in a short program. ran it, nothing. The output
doesn't overwrite on the console anymore. but where it goes is beyond
me. It pretty simply disappears.

What i'm wondering if 1) has anyone tried this and gotten it to succeed
(for a sg device, it's too simple to actually screw up); or 2) can
someone at DEC look at the modified sg.o driver and tell me if the code
works, but doesn't support this anymore.

thanks
