I'm bringing up X11V3 on our system(s) and as normal I am running in a list of problems. o The troff /doc/HelloWorld/xhw.ms doesn't seem to be in the Imake file and I can't seem to find the right combination of macros and filters to get a readable output. I tried tmac.s, which formats the text fine but leaves the sample programs unreadable. o Though the X11V3 seems to work allright most of the contrib stuff doesn't seem as portable and some of it would be useful. Any one have luck compiling perfmon on a convex? o I have the X WINDOW SYSTEM C Library and Protocol Reference, and though it is a nice reference book, It does not meet my needs as an introduction to X programming. Does anyone have a more tutorial oriented reference? o The purpose of X at this sight is to help connect vaxs with a Convex and suns as a top level interface for some very large programs. Currently we have X running on the Convex and the suns with DecWindows on order. I now hear that DecWindows will not TCP but there are several reference to decnet in the sources and in the documentation. How well does decnet work with X? Other than compiling with the decnet options on the suns and adding the vaxs to the xhost tables is there anything else required to get them to work together? Like special device drivers? Hardware? o Looking at the sources and the refrences to DECnet its clear that the convex's COVUEnet is not directly compatable with what ever machine the programer was writing for. Anyone know what changes must be made for a convex? (The convex can't open sockets with VMS but it does support "logical links" which seems to be attached to /dev/ll) o What is a the expected speed for line drawings through X. I did a few test runs using a very simple loop and timed 1200 lines/sec which is very slow. It is very possible that the way I opened the window and drew the lines was at fault can I expect better performance once I get a better hang of the code. (This was on a sun as the server and a convex 210 running the client) Please reply by mail. Thank you. -------------------------------------------------------------------- back@elbereth.rutgers.edu r2d2.rutgers.edu arakis.rutgers.edu
