As usually restrictions are due to money, money, money.

I don't think there will be any restrictions in non-commercial use of
X Windows - e.g. you are able to distribute both source and binary
X11 applications without worries.

Concerning the runtime X11 it all depends on the company that has ported X11
to the target machine. I think there will be PD run-time systems - eventually
FSF (Free Software Foundation, one of these 1E6 Foundations today) will
release a totally _free_ X11 run-time system with full source.

Other things that companies might do (I am not speaking of the
company I represent):

* There will be no fees to distribute the X libraries and include files,
especially if they are identical to the MIT source.

* companies like DEC that enhance the X wants a fee for their work.

* Workstation companies eventually want a small/medium/big fee for the actual
run-time system - if a developer wants the X11 included with the product.
Anyway most of the workstation manifacturers bundle the X11 for free
with the system software (and charge for the manuals!).

Does anyone else have any wild speculations about how to make money with
X11?

Reg,
Kent
