As you know, DEC is responsible for a large part of the development of X11. Digital has announced the DECwindows program which uses X11 as its foundation. Below is the "offical" word from the DECwindows product manager. Peter Hack P.S. Hack is my real name, no foolin'! ------- Forwarded Message Digital will use the X Window System to integrate its desktop devices (PCs and workstations). Digital is currently working on providing X for VMS and ULTRIX. Richard ------- End of Forwarded Message

Can the MIT software of X11r3 run on a DEC VMS workstation (such as uVAX and the 3100), or do people have to wait till Digital offers it as a commercial\ product. If the MIT software can be used, how hard is it to get it up and running. -r mailjp Jean-Paul Otin MITRE Corporation M/S K320 Burlington Road Bedford, Mass. 01730 617/271-2314 jpfo@mbunix.mitre.org

I'm porting the X11r3 client-library to VMS VAX (VAX8530) with CMU TCP/IP. I have implemented a small BSD Unix like tcp/ip library. Most of the XLIB is working, but I have had some mysterious problems with CMU TCP/IP communicating with our Suns. But some of the test and demo-programs already work with this VMS-CMU-X client and Sun servers (like XCalc, muncher, etc... ). I still have some problems with reading keyboard events from the server, but when that is fixed, I'll make this Xlib for VMS available by Anonymous ftp. But implementing an full X-server from MIT-sources for VMS workstation is another thing :-) Jussi M{ki | Internet: jmaki@santra.hut.fi Helsinki University of Technology, Finland | uucp: ...!mcvax!santra!jmaki Computing Centre | Bitnet: jmaki@fingate.bitnet Education Support Division / VMS-sysmgr | Voice: + 358 - 0 - 451 4317
