[comp.windows.x] XSIGHT Performance on a 12MHz PC/AT

dunham@hc.DSPO.GOV (Scott R. Dunham) (03/10/89)

For those of you considering using a PC/AT as an X11 terminal, here
is some of my experience using XSIGHT, an X11 server for an IBM PC/AT
sold by Locus Computing.

We have a PC Limited PC/AT compatible running at 12MHz, w/ Vega VGA and
Execlan Ethernet running as an X11 terminal to a Sun 3/260 (SunOS 4.0) w/
X11R3 everything. XSIGHT works and surprising well. uwm and its pop-up
menus are noticably sluggish though. However, our own applications
tend to use tremendous ammounts of widgets from one toolkit or another
which quickly point out how little the 1.2Meg of PC memory that we have is.

We are planning to try adding several meg to the PC to get our applications
running (several people have their fingers crossed).

Although a Sun 3 running B&W is preferable, the X-PC is worth considering
in my opinion (exp. if you have these things around!)

			happy trails ...
