[comp.windows.x] Murderous xterm; rgb with Xqvss

jimc@julia.math.ucla.edu (03/16/89)

When you exit from xterm, all login sessions on the machine running
xterm are killed. This happens ~20 out of 20 times on Vaxstation II /
Ultrix v1.2 and 2 out of 2 on Alliant FX-8 / Concentrix 4.1.0 (similar
to 4.2BSD). I think it doesn't happen on SunOS v3.5 but I was having
enough other problems then that I could have failed to notice being
killed (1 trial). The Vaxstation client was compiled on 4.3BSD; other
such clients work fine. The machine running the server is unaffected if
different. All users are affected, not just your sessions. It happens
no matter how xterm is started (login shell from xdm, rlogin then
execute xterm, etc.) Daemon processes survive but <root> does not (I
think). If anyone has any ideas I (and other users on my systems) would
very much like to hear. Please mail direct as I normally don't get this
newsgroup. Thanks.

Another wierdo bug with the Xqvss server on VAXstation II (monochrome):
With the distributed rgb database, most clients say "X toolkit error:
cannot allocate colormap for White", also black, and the window comes out
black on black. Specifying -bg #fff -fg #000 (etc.) let them function
with no complaints. (Thanks to tek@cs.ucla.edu for this suggestion.)
-fg black got the message. Similarly for blue, yellow. HOWEVER, tan and
lime green were acceptable colors! After some digging, I did both of the
following: changed all 0's to 1's and all 255's to 254's in the rgb
database. After I rebuilt the database with "rgb" and restarted the
server, clients started working. This definitely does not happen on Sun
(Xsun server).

Suggestion to MIT: the error message was confusing, directing blame at
the colormap allocation routines in the server. I wish it had said
"color black unknown to server".
