ANNOUNCING 'C' NEWS 'C' news is the successor to 'B' news. It is bigger and better, with newer bugs than ever before. 'C' news is the natural result of applying 'fifth-generation' concepts to the problems of reading and producing news. o Flaming. 'Flame' lines in your '.newsrc' file can be used by 'C' news to identify keywords in incoming articles -- for example 'abortion', '55', 'VMS' -- and send out automatic followups from files. If no file is specified, 'C' news uses the 'litcrit' program from the University of Southern North Dakota to produce commentary appropriate to the subject. A numeric parameter may be specified to control the heat of the flame. o Automatic Posting. 'C' news allows you to automatically forward all your work to the net. Simply run 'inews -a directory' every night from 'cron', where directory is your home directory. Every English text file found in this directory or its subdirectories is posted automatically! Even better, 'C' news has a new 'mail' interface: just alias 'mail' to 'inews -M' and everything you meant to mail is automatically sent to the net instead! o Trivia. 'C' news comes with an immense catalog file of trivia. Never again will you be at a loss for words when you feel like posting something but can't think of what to say. Puns, queries about 'rc' files, patio furniture jokes, questions about how to remove files with funny characters in their names: this incredible repository of information is right at your fingertips! o Keeping Up With the News. Did you ever worry that in that amazing morass of net submissions, there might be something worth reading and you missed it? With 'C' news, rather than jumping through news items loosely lumped into groups and ordered by time of receipt, the interface will automatically search the entire news directory tree using a decision tree algorithm that discovers exactly the best quality articles, and presents them to you in order of tastefulness. The algorithm is not deterministic and unfortunately does not always terminate, but 'C' news cleverly allows you to enjoy a good game of 'rogue' on your terminal while you wait. Best of all, under 'C' news, every one of the articles you submit is AUTOMATICALLY cc'ed to 'net.general'! Just think of all the time and effort this would have saved the people who posted these messages: Newsgroups: btl.general,net.general (Message-ID: <236@whuxk.UUCP>) Newsgroups: net.general,net.wanted (Message-ID: <430@ihuxw.UUCP>) Newsgroups: net.general,net.news,net.wanted (Message-ID: <153@laidbak.UUCP>) Newsgroups: net.wanted,net.general (Message-ID: <328@gatech.UUCP>) Newsgroups: net.general,net.usenix,net.micro (Message-ID: <364@ssc-vax.UUCP>) Newsgroups: net.news,net.general,net.misc,net.flame (Message-ID: <336@gatech.UUCP>) Newsgroups: net.general,net.wanted,net.video (Message-ID: <3889@ukc.UUCP>) Newsgroups: net.mail,net.general,net.news (Message-ID: <173@cbosgd.UUCP>) Newsgroups: net.books,net.general (Message-ID: <257@burl.UUCP>) Newsgroups: net.general,net.math,net.wanted (Message-ID: <529@tekcad.UUCP>) Newsgroups: net.general,bell.general (Message-ID: <166@tty3b.UUCP>) Newsgroups: net.general,net.wanted (Message-ID: <425@nmtvax.UUCP>) Newsgroups: net.aviation,net.general,net.flame (Message-ID: <181@teltone.UUCP>) Newsgroups: net.general,net.periphs (Message-ID: <292@sun.UUCP>) Newsgroups: net.wanted,net.general (Message-ID: <264@presby.UUCP>) Newsgroups: net.general,net.wanted (Message-ID: <640@vax2.UUCP>) Newsgroups: net.general,net.wanted,net.micro (Message-ID: <161@laidbak.UUCP>) Newsgroups: net.general,net.misc,net.wanted (Message-ID: <165@laidbak.UUCP>) Newsgroups: net.wanted,net.general,nj.wanted (Message-ID: <214@abnjh.UUCP>) How to get 'C' news: For ease of use and speed of access, 'C' news is unmatched by any previous Unix news software.
