[comp.windows.x] X on the TI Explorer

DEG41560@UA1VM.BITNET (Rob Smith) (03/23/89)

Hi,
We have just added two TI Explorers to our network, and we would like to run
X on them for compatability with other machines. I would love to here from
anyone who has gotten X up on an Explorer, since I'm in the dark about the
necessary procedures for using CLX. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Also, what happens if you run X underneath (over? through? in?) the TI
local window system?

                                         Again, any advice appreciated.

                                               Thanks,

                                                 Rob.

You're in great shape for developing CLX clients on an Explorer. The CLX
defsystem just works (see also comments about suggested logical pathnames), so
installation is a breeze. As for learning how to program in CLX, see DOC.LISP,
but be sure also to grab a copy of Mike Myjak's new CLX manual (still in
progress). See forwarded message below. If you like, I can also send you a
brief CLX tutorial, which includes code for a programming example (please
specify if you prefer LaTeX source or Postscript).

However, you currently cannot use your Explorer as a server. Your Explorer
clients will need to connect to another host running an X server.

A version (dated 3/8/89) of the preliminary CLX document can be found on
csc.ti.com:~ftp/pub/clx.doc (and clx.doc.Z for the compressed version).
Versions will be periodically updated as available, until completed 'round the
first of next month.

There is now a (slightly older 3/4/89) version molded into LaTeX that is now
available, as well as a PostScript version created from the LaTeX DVI file.
Please note that the LaTeX version comes with a seperate index file. The files
are as follows:

clx.doc current, updated ASCII version
clx.doc.tex last weeks version, in LaTeX,
clx.doc.ind	index file, which is to be \input into above LaTeX file
clx.doc.ps post script version (via LaTeX DVI file conversion)

The files are located in csc.ti.com (10.7.0.46) in the ~ftp/pub directory.
Compressed versions (.Z) are also available.

Please direct any comments/suggestions/corrections to Mike Myjak
<Myjak@csc.ti.com>.
