Is anyone working on a "split" server that runs well over dial-up lines to a Mac under the MacOS (i.e., not A/UX)? This would be similar to what GraphOn did for their X terminal, but using the Mac as the terminal. I ask because it seems like this will always be more effective at utilizing the dial-up bandwidth (9600 or 19200, of course) than running even a compressed SLIP to accomplish the same task. (Why? Because it seems like the Unix half of the server could craftily encode its serial RPC requests in a form which is quite specific to its MacOS partner, and do so in a very compact fashion for the most common requests. I could be wrong, of course, but peoples' experiences with the GraphOn tend to support this theory.) Maybe the GraphOn folks would care to donate their Unix half-server to the Consortium, and establish a simple standard? --Chris Ryland Multiflow Computer, Inc. 175 North Main Street Branford, Connecticut, USA 06405 Phone 203-488-6090, FAX 203-483-1624 ryland@multiflow.com, ...!uunet!mfci!ryland

Wishful thinking, I don't think GraphOn distributes even source to this to customers who want to run it on machines other than SUNs. Perhaps there is something to the GNU way of handling freeware. brooks@maddog.llnl.gov, brooks@maddog.uucp, .../uunet!maddog.llnl.gov!brooks
