[net.news] announcing net.announce

mark@cbosgd.UUCP (09/02/83)

The newsgroup net.announce is finally ready to be used. I urge everyone
on the net to subscribe to it (even those who have turned off net.general).

net.announce is moderated. This means that the news software will
prevent posting directly to the newsgroup. All submissions go through
a moderator (myself), and things that are really important enough
to be read by everybody will be posted. The intent here is to keep
the junk off the newsgroup so that people won't be tempted to unsubscribe.
It is important to have a mechanism to reach everybody on the net.
It is expected that the volume on net.announce will be very low.

net.announce is an experimental newsgroup. It is intended to replace
net.general, but net.general will continue to exist in its current form.
If you have comments or suggestions, please either send them to me via
mail, or raise them for discussion in net.news.

By the way, to anyone who feels challenged to break the moderation
scheme and post unmoderated messages, please don't bother. The
scheme is quite simple and you won't have any trouble forging such
messages. net.announce was not designed to keep the malicious user
off, it was designed to prevent mistakes.

Hmmm. A moderator to screen the articles & decide if they're worthwhile.....

No thanks! Although the intentions may be honorable, I prefer to be my own
censor.

Doesn't the Soviet media do the same for its people?

....doesn't need anyone to do it for me,
