Whatever software is handling the gateway between fa.info-vax and USENET is generating incorrect source addresses. All the articles here have From: root@ucbvax.UUCP or From: sklower@ucbvax.UUCP in the netnews header with the first line of the article being From GEOFF5@SRI-CSL Sat Sep 10 17:39:33 1983 (with varying dates, of course). When the article is signed, the author is neither 'sklower' or 'GEOFF5', but as most are unsigned or don't have the author's address in the text, there is no way to send a reply. There is obviously correctly working gateway software handling the other ARPA groups.
