[comp.windows.x] R3 xterm on R2 display - help!

nomad@verdix.com (Lee Damon) (04/04/89)

I bet this has already come up, but I missed it. Please e-mail replies
and I will sum up if there is demand...

I have a system that runs X11r2, I can't replace it with r3 (I tried,
really). Problem is that all the other machines here are now running
r3. I want to be able to xterm on those machines, but the display is
all wrong when I do. The bottoms of each line get shaved off and the
margins of the window are placed wrong - making it very hard to read
the display.

Is there a simple conversion tool, command, or something I can do to
make r3 xterm (and other things) show up correctly on the r2 display?
I couldn't find a switch in the xterm command line that would do it.

Unfortunately I can't give details on machine type or wm, as they are
confidential...

I don't think your problems are directly related to the protocol. I'm
right now reading netnews using an R2 server (ILA's server for
Symbolics Lispms, a straight port of the sample X11R2 server) and R3
xterm.

It sounds more like bugs in your server, not the fact that it's based
on R2.

[Man! Finally got caught up enough to start reading news again. What a
mess. Oh well, only 1200 more articles in comp.windows.x ...]

| [Lee describes a problem he has with V11R3 xterm clients and V11R3 server:
| ``The bottoms of each line get shaved off and the margins of the window
| are placed wrong - making it very hard to read the display.'']

I run into exactly the same problem if I try to use a V11R2 xterm
client and my V11R3 server. Is there some slight differentce in the font
information passed between clients and servers between R2 and R3?

	My server happens to be:
Sun 3/50 or 3/60 running Sun OS 3.5
		X11.3 with patches 1 through 8 and Purdue+ 2.1
	Tested clients:
VAX 8650 and CCI Power 6 running 4.3BSD-Tahoe
