[net.news] proposed breakup of net.unix-wizards

rcj@burl.UUCP (R. Curtis Jackson) (09/23/83)

To net.news readers -- I am moving this discussion to net.news.group
where I should have started it in the first place.

To net.news.group readers: I posted this article to net.news yesterday,
and would like to add one clarification at the end to avoid my receiving
3000 letters that all say the same thing ----
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
We already have net.bugs.xxx, where xxx is a flavor of Unix.
Why not split up the HUMONGOUS net.unix-wizards into net.wiz.xxx
or something similar, where the xxx is the flavor of Unix being
referenced?

Try this on for size:

net.wiz	------	general non-flavor-specific Unix wizard articles
net.wiz.xxx --	articles relating to the xxx flavor of Unix
net.wiz.adm --	non-flavor-specific articles relating to Unix system
		administration (security stuff would go here, too)

If you will send me replies via mail, I will gladly summarize,
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

CLARIFICATION: I DO realize that there are other (though not as good :-))
operating systems on the net. But Unix is the primary and net.unix.wiz.*
would be too long if (as I believe) the 14-character-unique limit on
newsgroup names is still in effect. Since there are relatively few
people using non-Unix operating systems on the net, why not just have
things like net.wiz.vms and net.wiz.dos or whatever and not worry about
splitting them up since they don't have the traffic that Unix does.

Thanks for your time,
