How is it that X is heralded as portable when it's got so much BSD stuff baked into it? There is a distinction between having the interfaces designed so that they are relatively OS independent, and structuring the sample code that so that it is straightforward to port it to a new OS, and supplying sample code that actually works on a variety of OSes. We try reasonably hard on the first two, the latter only comes as we have resources and inclination. The sample code works on a variety of BSDish systems because people have contributed the code; the same cannot be said for SYSV.

Sorry if my previous posting sounded flamish. Wasn't meant to be. Any quarrel I have is with whatever passes for the "media" in this industry, who has not made the point sufficiently clear that the code which comes on the X tape(s) is "sample". From everything I read and hear, it seemed to me that, with some minor tweaks, I'd have it up and running in no time.
