[net.news] using the L flag in your sys file

martin@vax135.UUCP (Martin Levy) (10/05/83)

There are some long paths that news takes and without changing the
distrubution links those paths will remain long. Here is a solution
for that problem, use the L flag in your sys file.

The F flag will set up a netnews feed for locally generated articles but
not for any other article. the line would look like this:-

bigvax:net,fa:L:

Then you will be assured that your article would get a good starting point
(bigvax and your currect articles), I send local articles to 4 machines as
well as currect partners. The load and cost is minimum as we only send out
a few articles a week.

How do i decide who to feed?. First you should be polite and contact the
system adminstrator of the machines you want to feed, then enter the
line in the sys file. There MUST be a two way mail link between the sites
so that reply's will work, but there does not need to be the same local
news link setup. How did i decide?, well i knew that articles from bigvax
took a long path to get to me and i also saw articles coming via bixvax
taking a long time, so i deduced that my articles were delayed as much, so
i cantacted the site and then put the L line in the sys file. Another
way is for the news administrator of bigvax to send mail to littlesite and
get him to put a L line in his sys file, that method would be great.

so go exit out of readnews/vnews and edit up your sys file. you know
it makes sense!.

PS. look at the path this article took, bet it's shorter than normal.
