Machine: Vaxstation II Display: QDSS ??? OS : >> BSD 4.3 Tahoe << X Ver. : XV11R3 Summary: Do I have any hope of compiling a working server within the next six months? I am not an X Windows programmer, but am a semi-experienced system administrator that has worked with the X Windows System for over a year. I have installed X on 4 separate platforms in our department. I have been involved in minor porting efforts (read "hacks") on one server and many clients. This project is for another department, they just need the basic X Windows System; no toolkits or other goodies required (for the moment). "I told them it wouldn't be easy." My question is simple, how difficult is this going to be? I'm trying to give these guys some idea about how long it will take, and also trying to determine if I should even attempt it myself. It took me a few hours to get the initial include file and imake problems resolved so that I could at least attempt a full "make World". As expected, the server compile was a big disaster, but the clients seem to be ok. I'm wondering how much of the DEC code for the display is Ultrix specific (one might suspect this). I'm also wondering how much trouble I'll have with include files, ie. VaxArchitecture (==, !=, ~=)? Ultrix according to conventions in the code? Should I expect significant problems with server code because I need to #define things for a VAX but am running BSD? Is there a big gotcha I don't know about, or a simple solution I'm overlooking? I don't have any experience with this particular machine, but I think I understand the general problems pretty well. I would greatly appreciate anyone with _any_ information on such an endeavor. Thanks in advance. ========================================================================= Timothy W.
