This problem is precisely the reason for the CLIPBOARD selection and the
associated client (see Section 2.6.1.3 of the Inter-Client Communication
Manual).

I have placed xcutbuf, a utility for manipulatinig the X11 cut buffers,
on expo in contrib/xcutbuf.tar.Z.  I also sent it to x-sources, so it
should show up there Real Soon Now.

xcutbuf lets you put stuff into the cut buffer(s) from the command
line, a file, or standard input.  It also lets you examine the
contents of the cut buffers, and rotate their positions.  I plan to
use it for constructing aliases (or whatever) to stick data I use
often into a cut buffer.

the documentation...
