[comp.windows.x] New Xibm available from expo

jeff@polyslo.CalPoly.EDU (Skippy The Wonder Hacker) (04/25/89)

A new version of the X server for IBM RT's running AOS 4.3 is now available
for anonymous ftp from expo.lcs.mit.edu. The file is:
	contrib/ibm-rt.post-r3.tar.Z
This file contains new versions of all files under the server/ddx/ibm
directory. This server has fixes from IBM, MIT, and CMU, including those
posted by Richard Draves a while back. There are still a few known bugs,
and these are curently being looked at. Enjoy.

In rebuilding Xibm, the loader complains about an undefined symbol,
partmasks. It seems to be referenced by 'ddx/ibm/ppc/ppc.o', one
of the files which are distributed in object form only.

Am I doing something wrong, and can someone suggest a workaround?

Greetings Netland!

I grabbed the new server and went to build it for aed, apa16, and apa8c.
Unfortunately, I had to scrap the idea of building for the apa8c. It seems I
am missing (at least) 2 include files. They are genDecls.h and genProcs.h.
Where might I find these files? Also, has anybody worked up support for a
monochrome apa8? Will the apa8c code work on it?

					Thanks,
						/Chris

It appears that ppc.o was modified to accomodate the Purdue speedups
and distributed in this form. partmasks is an array which appears
only after applying the Purdue patches. End of mystery.

No, you are not doing something wrong. Some of the local
MIT environment crept into the ppc without my noticing.
I will put a new version on expo ASAP, which will also include some
	more APA16 fixes.

I have the new Xibm running on my 6152 using a 8514 display,
megapel, and APA16 displays. We have a APA8c display but some of the
include files were missing. The performance of the APA16 mono monitor seems
to be about the same as or faster than other vendors mono support. The
megapel seems to have a fairly fast color support, from what I have been
reading a reasonable color support is hard to come by. Now for the 8514
display. The 8514 is so fast that it rivals most of the mono displays I
have seen even though it has 8 color planes. Large filled circles draw
10-15 times faster than I have seen on any other color or mono server.
Unfortionatly IBM is not giving out the source for the 8514 driver because
it is so fast. It would be nice if some other servers can benifit from
8514's success. One suggestion I have for the sample IBM server is to
determine if a simple circle/ellipse is being drawn, if so use a faster
drawing algorithm like the ones in X11R1 or X11R2.

So, is the above problem fixed? Does this new server actually supports
apa8c?

No. When I tried to include apa8c support in the server it would not
compile because of missing include files. I ask the folk at IBM and
they tell me that it still is not in their plans to support the apa8c
in the near future.
