Long ago (in a galaxy far away), I submitted a news item to net.emacs. Since that time, I have been receiving more and more complex junk mail from various arpa sites in response. The latest example of the kind of stuff I have been receiving is attached to this article. This comes from ucbvax, but I have recieved similar junk mail from other sites, and several messages with page-long headers and no body from individuals recently, which may be related to the same root cause. I suspect that the trouble may result from my garbled signature (The result of unplugging my terminal from a hard-wired port while editing the submission), but I wish that someone out there in arpa-land would fix it. My appologies to the rest of the net, but I don't know how else to reach the appropriate people. >From **RJE** Mon Nov 7 19:24:56 1983 CST >From uucp Mon Nov 7 19:23 CST 1983 remote from ihnp4 >From Mailer@CMU-CS-C.ARPA Mon Nov 7 15:02:31 1983 remote from ucbvax Received: from CMU-CS-C.ARPA by ucbvax.ARPA (4.16/4.13) id AA05596; Mon, 7 Nov 83 15:02:31 pst Message-Id: <8311072302.AA05596@ucbvax.ARPA> Date: Mon 7 Nov 83 18:03:32-EST From: The Mailer Daemon <ucbvax!Mailer@CMU-CS-C.ARPA> To: ihnp4!ihnss!warren@BERKELEY Subject: Message of 4-Nov-83 17:32:25 Message undeliverable and dequeued after 3 days: harry@LBL-NMM.ARPA: Connection closed unexpectedly coar.umass-ece@UDEL-RELAY.ARPA: 451 Unknown mail trouble, try later walter.suny-sbcs@UDEL-RELAY.ARPA: 451 Unknown mail trouble, try later ss.wang-inst@UDEL-RELAY.ARPA: 451 Unknown mail trouble, try later local-emacs@UDEL-RELAY.ARPA: 451 Unknown mail trouble, try later unix-emacs-bbd.umcp-cs@UDEL-RELAY.ARPA: 451 Unknown mail trouble, try later Emacs.Cornell@UDEL-RELAY.ARPA: 451 Unknown mail trouble, try later Mark.UPenn@UDEL-RELAY.ARPA: 451 Unknown mail trouble, try later unix-emacs.arizona@UDEL-RELAY.ARPA: 451 Unknown mail trouble, try later Wft.Purdue@UDEL-RELAY.ARPA: 451 Unknown mail trouble, try later emacs-users@purdue.CSNET-EAST: 451 Unknown mail trouble, try later SteveP@BRL.ARPA: 451 Unknown mail trouble, try later ------------ Received: from CMU-CS-PT by CMU-CS-C with TCP; Fri 4 Nov 83 17:32:28-EST Received: from [128.2.254.192] by CMU-CS-PT with CMUFTP; 4 Nov 83 17:12:30 EST Received: from CMU-CS-PT by CMU-CS-A; 4 Nov 83 16:47:11 EST Received: from SRI-UNIX by CMU-CS-PT; 4 Nov 83 16:35:01 EST Received: from Usenet.uucp by sri-unix.uucp with rs232; 4 Nov 83 2:55-PST Date: 31 Oct 83 7:57:27-PST (Mon) To: Unix.Emacs @ Cmu-Cs-A From: ihnp4!ihnss!warren @ Ucb-Vax Subject: Re: Having problems using Gosling's emacs with HP2623 Article-I.D.: ihnss.1774 In-Reply-To: Article <314@ihuxa.UUCP> I have noticed this with other programs and certain hp terminals. I suspect that it is due to mis-handling of the terminals standout mode. I believe that these terminals require you to erase the text that has been highlighted with one of the clear capabilities (clear line, clear screen, etc.) to wipe out the highlighting. Otherwise, text written over the highlighted region stays highlighted. My emacs uses clear line to wipe out the highlighting when overwriting it. As I recall, you specifiy this in termcap by not setting "eo" and setting "xs". If these capabilities are set this way already, the problem may be in Gosling's emacs or in curses, if it uses curses. -- }sOS?fzo~~n{~W~O~;;3?=u~_~=9?{umo~g{om~u}gnu}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}69s{umo~f{s:9y:>s.signy~uz>~/n9/w}zzun/.signy~uzu Warren Montgomery ihnss!warren IH x2494 }9:s~~n{~W~O~;;3?=u~=9?{umo~g{om~u}gnu}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}y~~~}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}y~~~}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}y~~~}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}y~~~}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}:3 }>s~s[>}>s}sOS?g{o~>s~sZ>}>s}sOS?g{~n{~W~O~;;3?=u~_~=9?{umo~g{om~u}gnu}}}}}3?=u~_~=9?{umo~g{om~u}gnu}}}}}3?=u~_~=9?{umo~g{om~u}gnu}}}}}3?=u~=9?{umg{om~u}gnu}}}}}3?=u~=9?{umg{om~u}gnu}}}}}3?=u~=9?{umg{om~u}gnu}}}}}3?=u~={umg{om~u}gnu}}}}}3?=u~={umg{om~u gn ------- -- Warren Montgomery ihnss!warren IH x2494
