[comp.windows.x] Running both DECwindows and X11R3 on DECstations

mohrfeld@mohrfeld.cs.unc.edu (Katie Mohrfeld) (06/02/89)

We have a bunch of public DECstation 3100s and would like to allow our
users to run either DECwindows or their own X11 release 3 environment.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this ?

Thanks.

Well, environment... I assume you mean after the session manager or howver
you log in. The .Xdefaults file allows you to specify window manager, and
nothing forces users to use dxterm instead of xterm and dxmail instead of
xmh, so it seems to me relatively easy, no?

We constantly mix DECwindows applications and "standard" X11 applications,
including ones running off other cpu's (our environment is a mix of Sun,
DEC, 386's, and Mips cpu's). Not only does it work quite well, but it allows us
to pick not only the appropriate application, but the appropriate cpu to
run things from. (Ever see a pop-up menu from uwm on a Mips box compared
to a little VAX? Maahvelous! -:)

There are some minor nits, (dxcardfiler won't run under uwm, framemaker
won't run under dxwm), but with a small amount of flexibility the mixed
environment is *very* workable, and truly proves both the power and
functionality of X specifically and "networked computing" in general.
