[net.news] why local newsgroups

bukys@rochester.UUCP (Liudvikas Bukys) (12/18/83)

I would like to point out that local newsgroups also act as a primitive
sorting mechanism. I read all the "wny" (Western New York) groups
before I read the "net" groups, because I know that the "wny" groups
are more likely to contain something worthwhile. Certainly, posting to
"wny.general" will reach more people than posting to "net.general" with
"distribution: wny" would.

I hope that the keyword news proposers don't forget this. If you want
to abolish "net" and "wny", then your article sorters had better be
smart enough to show me the "region=wny" (or whatever) articles first
(if such is my desire). Do you still think you can provide adequate
performance?
