[comp.windows.x] Resource converter: XtRString -> XtRFloat

Damon.Lipparelli@CS.CMU.EDU (06/21/89)

Hello.

The X Intrinsics manual states on page 83 that there is a resource type
XtRFloat and then
on page 87 that there is a resource converter from XtRString to
XtRFloat. Well, as
I was writing a new widget this afternoon, I found that neither one of
these things are actually
defined by the Intrinsics. I did find XtRFloat defined in Scroll.h in
the Athena widget set, but still
no converter. Was this part of the manual supposed to be left out until
a later release?

Just curious,
Damon

No, it's a bug.

Keep in mind that the Xt "Manual" is also the Xt Specification. This means
than anything specified by the Intrinsics Documentation should be supported
by all Xt implementations. The implementation shipped by the MIT X Consortium
is a sample. This implementation is not a standard. If there are
cases where the Document and source code differ then there is a bug in
the code. This is true even for unsupported "features". Changing the
code is easy, changing the
specification is hard and requires a vote of all Consortium members.

We at the X Consortium are in the business of supporting specifications. The
fact the you also get free sample implementations (used for proof of concept)
is a bonus.

Sorry to get up on the soap box. I hope, however, that understanding what
is an is not a "standard" will help all you programmers out there
provide better and more supportable source code.
