or perhaps more accurately,

Frequently given answers to questions asked

1) RTF...
1a) RTFM - of course you may have some work to do to figure
      which manual to read.

1b) Check the new ICCCM but you'll have to wait for other
ICCCM-complient clients before you can really rely on the
      information therein.

1c) RTFS (this seems to be falling out of usage in favor of ...)

1d) UTSL ("Use the source, Luke") - after all, one of the nice(?)
things about the X Window System is that it comes with (most)
      source.

2) You didn't ..
2a) You didn't describe your problem well enough for anyone to
understand what your problem is. (Including a short program
that demonstrates the problem is often suggested.)

2b) You didn't include enough environment information for anyone
to be able to help you.

2c) You didn't apply the published patches; retrieve them by ftp
from expo or get them from a mail or UUCP server, apply them
(Larry Wall has written a very nice program to apply patches),
and see if your problem goes away.

2d) You didn't send your bug report to the right place. Bugs should
reported to xbugs; reread the release notes. Bugs reported only
to XPERT may or may not get fixed.

3) Versions
3a) Yes, there are differences between X11R2 and X11R3, particularly
      in respect to fonts.

3b) Yes, there are significant differences between X10 and X11.

4) Late summerish

I claim no credit for any of the info given; it has all appeared on the
XPERT mailing list repeatedly.

"This yearish" is (and has been) the party line.
