Hi, I used to pick up useful x software via ftp from uunet.uu.net, but it no longer works for my site (I am assured it is not a problem on this end, if anyone knows why uunet is broke, contact me by email). Do any other sites keep comp.sources.x updated online for ftp? All pointers appreciated, Rob.

I suspect it *is* a problem at your site. I was able to pick up
FaceSaver files from UUNET.UU.NET just fine last night, and was able
to connect and look around in /comp.sources.x just now.

The ``Compleat Works of Comp.Sources.X'' :-) is available via
anonymous ftp from XANTH.CS.ODU.EDU in /pub/usenet/comp.sources.x/

Maybe, but this is what I get:
ftp> open uunet.uu.net
Connected to uunet.uu.net.
421- Can't map 128.123.12.16 to a valid hostname
We only allow ftp from recognized sites.
Get your system administrator to fix your domain servers.
421 anonymous ftp refused.

[ Yeah, ok, so this isn't really comp.windows.x material. It still
might be useful for some people who also get this message from UUNET...]

The message is pretty clearly saying that the problem is with your
domain servers.
What's happening here is that UUNET is trying to discover the name of
the machine you are ftp'ing from by doing a PTR query on your IP
address. If your domain servers are incorrect, it won't be able to do
this (and thus returns the 421 message above). Your administrator
needs to fix this.
UUNET is doing a ``Good Thing''(tm) by forcing sites to use the DNS.
