I've had some odd problems selecting hosts. I eventually tracked it down to using a version of X windows compiled on one machine in the department and then shipped over as a set of binaries. The source machine didn't have Yellow Pages but the target did and so X programs were not able to look up hosts. The solution: The problems with using the display option in X-windows applications was traced to not having Ultr*x 3.0 libraries available on my workstation. The compiler however managed to locate some old libraries and used those instead. So all the standard X functions worked apart from XOpenDisplay(). Thanks to all those who helped.
