[comp.windows.x] FWD: can you answer this? thanks.

John Lee asks what MIT release DECwindows on VMS corresponds to.

The answer is that VMS V5.1 and V5.2 DECwindows corresponds to MIT R2 for XLIB
and the Protocol. We incorporated the R3 toolkit intrinsics and the R3 font
naming conventions, however.

I can't say what goes on with the Sun stuff, but my guess would be that you
would not have much trouble if you did not USE any of the R3 Xlib features
on the Sun. In fact it may be MORE compatible because of the font names and
intrinsics. As I recall, the Xlib changes are mainly odds and ends of macros
that allow access to all the info that comes back from the server setup. (Can
someone correct me if I'm wrong).

The protocol should not be a problem, although I'm sorry to say that a bug in
the VMS server will prevent you from talking from a Sun client to a VMS server
whether you upgrade or not.

Of course, it would always be safest to upgrade one of your Suns and check it
out before you do them all.
