[comp.windows.x] Different server performance, benchmarking with x11perf

joel@pandora.pa.dec.com (Joel McCormack) (07/28/89)

I stuck yet another X server benchmark called x11perf out on expo
several weeks ago. It viciously exercises servers, using different
alignments and trying to get as many TLB faults as possible. It
also measures windowing performance, which is nice to know about if
you want menus and dialog boxes to be snappy.

The current version is on expo.lcs.mit.edu:/contrib/x11perf.tar.Z.
I have a new version in-house which also measures wide line
performance; I will put that version on expo in a few weeks.

When I do that, I'll make a formal call for people to send in their
results. Chris Kent has whipped up a nice hack to compare numbers
for any two server, and I'll include that as part of the distribution.
