We have SUN 3/50's, a SUN4/110, Vaxstation 200's and a set of IBM RT running AOS/4.3. Until we started with X11R3 on most of the machine you had to start X with xinit. On the vaxstations we here able to run X from the /etc/ttys file. But with the new X11R3 environment we would like to use xdm on all our work- stations. But we ran into a problem here. How do you redirect your console output so that it doen't messup the root window ????. If our sun fileserver has a lot a filsystem messages it writes them over the xdm login window and thereis no way you can refresh the screen. It is the same when I am working and root logs into my machine: a big fat warning over all my windows. My question is: how can I redirect console output when xdm lo- gin is running and how can I redirect the ouput when i am working to my first(console) xterm. Thanks for your help, Werner Vogels Haagse Hogeschool, Software Expertise Centrum email: werner@hhinsi or werner@nikhefk

On some machines, xterm -C will redirect console output -- on others it does nothing. You can start the xterm from your .xsession file. Donna Converse converse@expo.lcs.mit.edu
