[comp.windows.x] setting a root window background picture

franco@bbn.com (Frank A. Lonigro) (08/01/89)

Hi:
What are some of the ways for taking an X11 bitmap file and using
that as my root window background picture? I looked at xsetroot, but the
man page says that it will use the bitmap to "tile" the background, which
is not what I want. There used to be a program called xback for x10, but
that used the authors own bitmap format. I know there must be something
out there that does what I want. I have a DECstation3100 running DECwindows.

Thanks in advance,
-franco

If your bitmap "tile" is as big as the root window, and then you tile the
root window...

If you want to put a large (1152x900)bitmap into the background, and it is
for a Sun console workstation, I would suggest using xbgsun, a little program
written to put Sun rasterfiles into the background. It can be obtained from
gatekeeper.dec.com, in /pub/comp.sources.x/xbgsun directory. It's really
handy to use.
