[comp.windows.x] How do I efficiently program an X client?

gengenba@unipas.fmi.uni-passau.de (Michael Gengenbach) (08/06/89)

Hi,

beeing a novice in X programming, I have the question, which
programming language, toolkit, widget set or whatsoever should
I use to program a fancy user interface based on X with the
least effort necessary?

What I want is to create a user interface maybe like that on the
Macintosh (not the same, just look and feel). I have no restrictions
on the programming language or any other tool to use as long as
it is available for all hardware platforms (mainly DECStations
and Sun). Preferably it should be available free.

What I don't want is to care too much about low level stuff.
When I call a dialog box with 'yes'- and 'no'-buttons, I just
want the user's choice without doing anything but waiting.

Maybe the answer is Motif or Open Look which I have heard of, but
never seen. Are these real?

Thank you

   Michael
